Signs You Might Be a Highly Sensitive Person — And Why Therapy Can Help
Have you spent most of your life being told you are too sensitive? Too emotional? Too intense? That you take things too personally, feel things too deeply, or get overwhelmed too easily?
If so — this one is for you.
What is a Highly Sensitive Person?
The term Highly Sensitive Person — or HSP — was coined by psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron to describe a trait present in approximately 15 to 20 percent of the population. High sensitivity is not a disorder or a diagnosis. It is a nervous system trait — a biological reality in which the brain processes sensory information, emotional experiences, and environmental stimuli more deeply and thoroughly than average.
Highly sensitive people notice things others miss. They feel things others brush off. They are often deeply empathetic, creatively gifted, and profoundly attuned to the world around them. They are also frequently overwhelmed, overstimulated, and exhausted from navigating a world that was not designed with their nervous system in mind.
Signs You Might Be a Highly Sensitive Person
You feel emotions deeply and intensely — both your own and others
You are easily overwhelmed by loud environments, crowds, or sensory stimulation
You notice subtleties in your environment that others seem to miss entirely
You need significant alone time to decompress and recharge
You are deeply affected by art, music, or beauty in ways that feel almost physical
You have a rich and complex inner life
You have been told your whole life that you are too sensitive or too much
You feel the emotions of people around you as if they were your own
You become overwhelmed when you have too much to do at once
You find violent or disturbing content in movies or news deeply upsetting
High Sensitivity and Neurodivergence
High sensitivity frequently overlaps with neurodivergent experiences including ADHD and autism. Many neurodivergent individuals are also highly sensitive — and many highly sensitive people recognize neurodivergent traits in themselves. The experiences are not identical but they share a common thread — a nervous system that experiences the world with greater depth and intensity than the neurotypical norm.
At Oak Haven Therapy we understand this overlap intimately — both clinically and personally.
Why Therapy Can Help
Living as a highly sensitive person in a world not built for your nervous system is genuinely hard work. Many HSPs develop anxiety, burnout, or depression not because something is wrong with them but because they have been masking, suppressing, and overriding their natural responses for years just to get through the day.
Therapy at Oak Haven is not about making you less sensitive. It is about helping you understand your sensitivity, honor it, and build a life that works with your nervous system rather than against it. It is about finally having a space where being exactly who you are is not just accepted — it is celebrated.
You were never too much. The spaces you were in were simply not enough.
